Planning: One of the Essentials of Success

There’s a popular saying that has been used and modified countless times. It is referred to as the Four P’s and it essentially states that “Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance”. Now in any endeavor there are a variety of steps that take place before something is achieved but they cannot be visualized without having a plan. A goal is a dream with a plan and though “the best laid plans of men and mice often go awry” it is better to plan and then experience hardship rather than fail to plan and then experience hardships.

  1.  I believe that in drafting a plan there are several questions one should ask themselves during the process, the first being what is my overall goal?
  2. After firmly considering the goal the next concern should be possible things that could slow this process down such as lack of funds. A plan that factors in unknown is more realistic than one that fails to account for life’s random acts and is as a result more likely to be stoic.
  3. After considering factors that could halt the goal, the next step is to begin to start logistically assigning benchmarks and dates in which benchmarks should be obtained. A good plan is similar to a solid script in that it is scripted as well as possible with room for improvisation. The use of dates is necessary as it gives focus and can be constantly referred to as a reminder of progress made or missed. Once again it is important to remember that the dates are malleable and can be adjusted due to unforeseen circumstances, but they should be included in the plan if for nothing more than to motivate and center your ambition. After carefully writing out your objective, mapping outcomes and setting benchmarks the only thing left to do is to internalize your plan. This step should be looked at as the easiest step in the process due mainly in part to the fact that not only do your plans come from inside of you, but they also reflect ideals and goals you plan to accomplish in the near future.

In my opinion, planning remains the most vital part of a journey and it is a part that is forgotten and seldom applied. In our gusto to appear proactive as people we forget that great projects and ideas all come as a result of not only hard work, but thoughtful and deliberate planning. The quality of your vision hinges on the attention to detail you apply to your plans and your failure to plan for your future only strengthens the plan of another.
