Logic is one of my favorite rappers as of recent. His debut album Under Pressure and single Under Pressure peaked my curiosity and inspired me to support the project. With the exception of a handful of hip -hop artists, I can without any inhibition say that I do not spend my funds on supporting an artist’s project so when I do the urge to do so stems from a deep seated love for the culture and good art. Needless to say I’ve supported Logic’s projects ever since and consider myself a fan of his work. His diverse background, honesty and ability make him one of the most underrated rappers in the game.
That is why when I saw postings on various hip-hop websites about his new projects I perked up. The first post I see was a response from another rapper OG Maco criticizing the proposed title of his next project AfricAryAn ,. I stared at the title curiously, unsure of Logic’s intention with the new project. Logic’s cleared up the meaning on the Dan Harmon podcast, stating ““Scientifically proven, the first man and woman [are] from Africa, and over time, culturally evolving into a lighter and lighter and much more fairer skin. So the album is going to be called AfricAryaN. And it’s about me being black and white and seeing life from two sides.”
I believe in my heart that the title is not an attempt at gaining more marketing nor is it a racial manifesto to encourage a radical hate based group. I think that this an attempt by a honest and witty rapper at promoting a message of peace and unity. I do however think that at times the same things that make us witty are the same things that can cause us to be misunderstood which can be to our own detriment. For those who are fans of his work like myself, allowances will be made as we will no doubt chalk it up to him being too witty for the average listener. For those who are not as familiar with him and his brand however this could either be a reason to look into his brand or reject it. Only time will tell.
