There’s a Blu Sky: 3 Things to Help Ease The Breakup Blues

For every Jay-Z and Beyónce relationship, there are persons in the background somewhere shouting about how they helped the former achieve their greatness.  Hence the Blu reference.      jay-zIn our lives, we have either been guilty of such crimes or found ourselves an unwilling witness to others perpetuating such offenses. As healthy as it to self-reflect at times, it can also be toxic and when it does, it becomes necessary for us to step back and remember some crucial things.

“Possession is nine-tenths of the law.”

As much as we hate to acknowledge it, we do not own anyone in this life. People are free to be with who they choose and unless your union is recognized by God and subsequently the law, possession is nine-tenths of it. In short, it is harmful to feel as though our friend or lover is indebted to us because of what we have done for them. From a spiritual perspective, our bodies are not even ours, rather vessels loaned to us to accomplish God’s purpose. Scientifically speaking our energy is just that and when we expire it goes back to the universe. So when you find yourself reminiscing and lamenting over what role you played in their lives, remember that your effort by no means requires them to be indebted to you for it.

Words to Live By

“Just dream about the get back.”

Jay-Z once spoke of an incident that occurred with a friend of his on his debut album and in the verse, he says “This is a minor setback, yo still in all we living, just dream about the get back.”  The get back he’s referencing can be of course construed as revenge, but I offer a different interpretation. The Get Back is what happens when you are able to release yourself from false ties of ownership to people and instead open yourself up to being free. Instead of seeking revenge or validation, you accept that you possess the love that someone needs with the understanding that you must first be able to love without retribution. Love’s power lies in the fact that much like charity, it is given to the needy without hope of a return. You must be able to dream about the get back and while you dream of its joy, dually be able to focus on loving yourself selfishly.

“Give up to Go up.”

Many a great leader has echoed the sentiment that in order for things to happen, a sacrifice is required. In order to get something better, you must be first wise enough to know that what you have is not enough, and then willing to set it aside for something better to come along. Too often we are unwilling to let others be happy when they do just that. If they left you behind on their journey to happiness, applaud them for having the strength to do so or the smarts to know that that was right. When they leave, you too must make a decision to let go of your misguided energy towards the situation and instead redirect it towards yourself. I was told that when removing a harmful tendency from your life you must replace it with a more constructive practice that can fill the void it has left. Give up the resentment and anger towards them and yourself and be prepared for more. Or you can just keep posting mini stories about how you made them the person they needed to be etc.
