Big Oomp Recording artist CheekoFue recently shared details on a road rage incident in May that caused him to be hospitalized.
“ I saw a white SUV cut across three lanes and cut me off. I beeped them three times and they took their foot off the gas. The car got off to the right of me and then behind me. Next thing you know I see I have holes in my arm.”
Targeted by a random motorist, Cheeko was shot eight times on May 31, 2023, while driving on I-285. Upset over the attack, he initially gave chase and pursued his assailants, but blacked out due to the shock.
Once he regained consciousness, he found himself in the middle of the interstate searching for his phone to contact 911.
“I snapped back from being unconscious, and I didn’t even know where I was. I told the police I needed water and I couldn’t breathe. Through it all though I thought this is something to laugh about.”
Rushed into surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, Cheeko found out that the tremendous amount of blood he lost in one of his arteries could have resulted in him losing his life. Inspired to chronicle his pain, Cheeko began making music while in bed, writing raps for future freestyles and shooting videos that he would later use to showcase his story.
“The whole time I had my cameraman David Appel(one of my best friends who happens to be one of the cameramen I use), bring the camera. We recorded a music video in the hospital and did a photo shoot.”
Undaunted by the attack, Cheeko’s endured a series of both physical and financial setbacks including mounting hospital bills and more. Sidelined for the next three to six months, he’s asked all of the people who read his story to help contribute as he attempts to rebuild his life and position himself as a spokesperson against gun violence.
